    • Take in two world-class archaeological sites on this full-day optional excursion. First, you’ll visit Bath, built in the 1st century as a vacation retreat for the empire’s elite. Then, continue on to unmistakable Stonehenge, whose exact origin and purpose remain shrouded in mystery more than 4,000 years after its construction.

    • Optional: Mount Pilatus
    • Venture to the top of Mount Pilatus, the majestic 6,387-foot peak that towers over Lucerne. In the summer, take a boat across Lake Lucerne and then ride the Pilatus cog railway—the steepest in the world—to the top. During other seasons, take a motorcoach to the base and a 45-minute cable car ride to the top, where you’ll enjoy splendid views. (Note: Warm clothes and appropriate shoes recommended.)

Enjoy a guided tour of the city’s Field of Miracles, where you can snap a picture of the 12th-century Leaning Tower, aslant ever since the third floor was built. This is where Galileo was said to have developed his laws of gravity. Also visit the adjacent cathedral and baptistery, which contain exquisite marble pulpits carved in the Gothic style.

    • Optional: Roman Catacombs
    • Opt to explore the mysterious world buried beneath Rome since the 2nd century. Christian burial grounds and priceless relics abound, and the art that lines the walls is world-class. Afterward, journey down the ancient Appian Way to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Note: Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. This optional is not recommended for those who are claustrophobic.

    1. Day 15: Depart for home
